Chandigarh: Voting has been announced for five municipal corporations and 44 city councils and nagar panchayats in Punjab. Voting for its elections will be held on 21st December. The State Election Commission gave this information on Sunday. According to the State Election Commission, all necessary preparations have been completed for the municipal elections.

Voting will take place from 7 am to 4 pm

State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary said that voting for five municipal corporations and 44 municipal councils and nagar panchayats will be held on December 21 from 7 am to 4 pm. He said, “The model code of conduct will be implemented from today.” The five municipal corporations for which elections are being held are Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Phagwara. For this, the process of filling nomination forms will start from 9th December and the last date will be 12th December. The nomination papers will be scrutinized on December 13 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations will be December 14.

37.32 lakh voters will vote

State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary said that 37.32 lakh voters can exercise their franchise in these elections. Of these, 17.75 lakh women and 204 third gender voters are included. He told that EVMs will be used for voting. Adequate number of EVMs have been arranged for use in the elections. After completion of voting, counting of votes will be done at the polling station on the same day. He informed that voting will be held for 381 wards of Municipal Corporations and 598 wards of Municipal Councils/Nagar Panchayats.

Security arrangements made for voting

Giving further information, he said that adequate security arrangements have been made by the police for voting. A total of 1,609 polling places will be created, of which 3,809 are polling booths. Of these, 344 polling stations have been declared hypersensitive and 665 sensitive. He said that a total of 21,500 personnel of the police department and home guards will be deployed. The Police Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police have been authorized to increase security arrangements at polling places. For this, about 23,000 election personnel will be deployed on election duty. 25 IAS and PCS officers will be appointed as general observers for the elections. (input- agency)
