Kamala Harris has chosen Tim Walz as her Vice President:
Voting for the presidential election is to be held in America on 5 November.
Presidential elections are to be held in the US in November this year. For this election, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has chosen Tim Walz as her vice-presidential candidate. Tim Walz is the governor of the US state of Minnesota.
This move of Kamala Harris is being seen as an effort to woo rural and white voters. Tim Walz has been a part of the US Army National Guard. He is also a former teacher, who was elected to the House of Representatives in 2006.
After serving in this position for 12 years, he became the Governor of the US state of Minnesota in 2018. As governor, Walz has worked on issues such as free meals in schools, climate change, tax cuts for the middle class and paid leave for workers in Minnesota.
Donald Trump has already announced his vice presidential candidate
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has chosen 39-year-old James David Vance for the post of vice-president. No delegate opposed Vance at the Republican Party convention on July 16. Vance was elected senator from Ohio for the first time in 2022. He is considered close to Trump.
However, before becoming a Trump supporter, Vance used to be his staunch opponent till 2021. In an interview in 2016, Vance called Trump worthy of condemnation. He also questioned his temperament and leadership style. Then in 2021, he apologized to Trump for this. He also expressed his desire to contest elections from the Republican Party. After this, he became close to Trump. Trump called David Vance the most qualified candidate for the post of Vice President.
The names of two Indian-origin people had also come up for the Republican Party’s vice-presidential candidacy. These included Vivek Ramaswami and Nikki Haley. Both the leaders had stood against Trump in the race to become the Republican Party’s presidential candidate. Later, after losing the election, they withdrew their names.
Kamala became the candidate after Biden withdrew from the presidential election
On July 21, US President Joe Biden withdrew his name from the presidential race. Along with withdrawing his name, Biden supported Kamala Harris as the presidential candidate. In the next 48 hours, Kamala Harris gathered support within the party.
Kamala Harris has also secured the required number of votes in the election for the presidential candidate within the Democratic Party held from August 1 to August 5. With this, she has become the presidential candidate from the Democratic Party. Kamala Harris will officially accept the candidature from the party in the Democratic Party convention to be held from August 19 to August 22.
