UPI will not work

From today on 1 April, the rules have changed for those who do UPI using apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm. The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has recently directed to remove the mobile number linked to UPI from the bank account, which are not active for a long time i.e. inactive. If, your bank account also has an inactive mobile number link, then you may face a big problem in transactions through UPI.

NPCI decision

NPCI has released this new guidelines in the past in view of the increasing cyber crime cases happening every day. National Payment Corporation says that the mobile number which is not being used or the number which is not active needs to be removed from banking and UPI system. These inactive numbers are causing technical problems. If, telecom operators have released these numbers in the name of someone else, then through these, the risk of fraud may increase.

Explain that for using UPI, it is very important to link the mobile number to the bank account. While making UPI payment, mobile number is a means of identity. This means that whenever you make a payment, the mobile number ensures whether the right person is getting the money or not. If such a number is no longer active or has been allotted to someone else, then there is a risk of payment failure. The payment made on the number of users will also be likely to reach another person’s account.

What to do?

  • If such a mobile number has been linked in any of your bank accounts, which are no longer active or you have not recharged it for a long time, then you have to confirm your telecom service providers (Jio, Airtel, VI, BSNL) whether this number is active in your name or not.
  • If the number is not active, then you should activate immediately or change the mobile number of your bank account.
  • NPCI has recently instructed banks and UPI apps to update the list of deleted mobile numbers every week.
  • This will ensure that inactive mobile number has been removed from the banking system after 1 April.
