The Tokyo Olympic medalist Indian boxer Loveleena Borgohen can go to the 70kg category, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has abolished her current 75 kg weight category for the Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles in 2028.
The IOC on Wednesday announced the program and players quota for the Olympics 2028. Due to the new change, Lovelina will either have to go down to 70 kg or try her luck in the weight category over 80 kg. Surprised by the developments, Lovelina told PTI from Guwahati, “This is a completely new information for me. It is quite shocking. I think I have to go down to 70 kg because it will be difficult for me to go up to more than 80 kg. ”
Her personal coach Pranamika Bora was also surprised by the development but said that after fitness and medical evaluation, the new weight class will be decided. Bora said, “I am really surprised by this news. It is too early to reach a decision. She can fight in both 70 and 80 weight classes but we have to do some tests before deciding on it. ”
Currently, the natural weight of Borgohen is 74 kg and Bora said that losing a lot of weight can reduce strength. Bora, who traveled with Borgohen for the Paris Olympics, said, “Currently, its natural weight is 74 kg and losing excessive weight can reduce its strength.” So we will see what he benefits more than what he benefits. ”
Boxing was confirmed to be included in the 2028 Olympics last month. Boxing will include the same number of men and women (seven in each) for the first time.
The new Olympic female categories include 51 kg (flyweight), 54 kg (banthamtwate), 57 kg (featherweight), 60 kg (lightweight), 65 kg (welterweight), 70 kg (light middleweight) and more than 80 kg (heavyweight). The men’s new weight categories for the Olympics are 55 kg (Banthamweight), 60 kg (Lightweight), 65 kg (Welterweight), 70 kg (Light Middle), 80 kg (Light Heavyweight), 90 kg (Heavyweight) and more than 90 kg (super heavyweight).
