Dispute over language

There was a dispute between the State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus conductor Basavaraj Mahadev Hawakari and some passengers in Belgavi over the language. The conductor spoke in Kannada, while the passengers were demanding to speak in Marathi language.

Three people and a minor allegedly attacked the conductor after the debate increased. The police arrested three accused and detained a minor. The minor then filed a complaint under the POCSO Act accusing the conductor of sexual harassment.

After the dispute escalated, the pro -Kannada organization opened a front. On Saturday, supporters of Kannada organizations in Chitradurga, Karnataka demonstrated in support of the bus conductor and put a soot on a bus of Maharashtra Transport Corporation.

The incident further increased tension after which extensive security arrangements have been made. Currently, the bus service between the two states has been stopped from 7 pm on Saturday night to further orders. The situation is under control, efforts are being made to resolve the matter through negotiations.
