A 36-year-old policeman allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service gun in Kerala’s Malappuram district. His body was found in the bathroom of the quarter on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Vineet, a native of Wayanad district. He was serving as the Thunderbold Commandos in Malappuram and was currently part of the Special Operations Group (SOG). The Thunderbolt force is engaged in anti-Maoist search operations. It is being told that Vineet was upset at not getting leave despite repeated requests. However, the police have not yet confirmed this. Meanwhile, the opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has described the incident as extremely painful and demanded a high-level inquiry.

A police officer said on Monday that Vineet was found dead in the bathroom of his quarter, he had shot himself. The reason behind the incident is not yet known. Police have sent the body to the nearest government hospital for postmortem and the investigation process has been completed.

Allegation of mental harassment by superiors

Meanwhile, opposition leader VD Satheesan said it has been alleged that Vineeth has committed suicide due to mental harassment by his superiors. He said that messages allegedly sent by Vineet in connection with this case have come to light in the media.

Had asked for leave to take pregnant wife to hospital

Satheesan, citing statements of Vineet’s colleagues, said that denial of leave led to the incident. The Leader of Opposition said that Vineet had applied thrice for leave to take his pregnant wife to the hospital, but his request was rejected, which was inhuman.

Suicide in police has become a daily occurrence: Satheesan

“Suicide has become a daily occurrence in the state police force, which is responsible for maintaining law and justice in the society,” Satheesan said. He alleged that though the opposition had raised the issue of excessive workload and mental stress among police personnel in the Assembly, the government did not take any effective action.

Appeal to the state government for effective measures to prevent suicide

“The government should conduct a high-level investigation into the officer’s suicide and take action to hold those responsible accountable,” Satheesan said. He also urged the state government to implement effective measures to prevent suicide among police personnel.
