Helping Out at Bad Times:
Heavy rains which had started since morning greatly interfered with rescue operations. Despite these adverse conditions, emergency response teams worked hard to evacuate casualties from the derailed compartments to the nearest hospital without stopping even once. According to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Katihar division in the northern frontier railway, 13174 Kanchanjunga Express met with an accident whereby it hit goods train causing a major incident that happened at around 9 o’clock today morning.
In addition to this roadblock caused by outright derailments that may call for special machineries and combined crew work towards ensuring passenger safety in a quicker way, there was utter helplessness. The rescue workers had to be quick on their feet through the debris under constant downpour indicating their high standard of service delivery during difficult times.
Government Response and Financial Aid:
In the aftermath of the incident, the central and state governments stepped in quickly to provide relief and support to the victims’ families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared an ex-gratia compensation from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) at Rs. 2 lakh each for dependent member of deceased person and Rs.50,000 for those hurt seriously. Therefore, this financial assistance has served as alleviation measures for immediate needs on behalf of victims as well as their relations for whom it might appear as a great moment of relief.
