Iniyan Panneerselvam has won the 9th Johor International Open chess tournament in Malaysia. The 22-year-old Iniyan, from Erode, Tamil Nadu, averaged 8.5 points in nine games. He defeated four International Masters and one Grandmaster, finishing 1.5 points ahead of his opponent.

Indian Grandmaster Iniyan Panneerselvam has won the 9th Johor International Open chess tournament in Malaysia. The 22-year-old Iniyan, from Erode, Tamil Nadu, averaged 8.5 points in nine games. He defeated four International Masters and one Grandmaster, finishing 1.5 points ahead of his opponent.

This 9-round tournament ended on Thursday. In which 84 participants from eight countries took part, out of which 24 players were title holders. Even before the final round, Inian had secured the title by defeating Indonesian IM Nayaka Budhidharma. He was ahead in the points table by 1.5 points.

Inian performed brilliantly in the final round by defeating Vietnamese GM Nguyen Van Hui. Indian IM VS Rahul and Chinese IM Li Bro finished second and third respectively. Inian who also won the Chennai Open in January. He gained 15 rating points from this title win.

Panneerselvam Iniyan is the 71st player from India to be awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE. He achieved his first GM norm at the Ciutat de Montcada Open in June 2017. 2nd at Böblingen Open in February 2018, 2nd at Böblingen Open in July 2018, 3rd at Barbera del Vallés Open in July 2018. Also achieved fourth place at the Andorra Open in 2017, second place behind Richard Rapport at the Coppa Vergani in Villarba in January 2018.
