Birth and family
Baichung Bhutia was born on 15 December 1975 in Tinkitam, Sikkim. His parents used to do farming in Sikkim. He did not want Bhutia to pursue a career in sports. But after his father’s death, Bhutia’s uncle Karma Bhutia supported him in playing football. At the age of just 9, Bhutia won a football scholarship. After which he got a chance to go to SAI’s training academy in Gangtok.

Let us tell you that he started his football career with East Bengal Club. Where Baichung Bhutia spent four seasons with the I-League football team. Then in the year 1992, Bhutia attracted attention by winning the Best Player Award. Bhutia signed with English club Bury in 1999 and became the first Indian player to sign with a European club. Under his captaincy, India won the SAFF Cup thrice and the Nehru Cup twice.
Apart from this, under the captaincy of Baichung Bhutia, the Indian football team won the FC Challenge Cup in the year 2008 and India played the Asia Cup for the first time since 1984.
