We searched for a news report related to it through the relevant keywords. In a news of Live Hindustan, 14 February 2025, it was reported that from February 10, the students of Jamia were protesting against the university administration for giving their various demands, especially the cause notice.
During this, 14 students were taken into custody by Delhi Police on the morning of 13 February. No angle with Waqf Bill was told anywhere in the news.
We searched for media reports related to the demands of the students. Dainik Jagran’s 17 February report said, “Students’ demands include FIRs, suspension and cancellation of disciplinary proceedings against all disagreeing students, stopping show cause notices to the protesting students and withdrawing all the show cause notices immediately.”
During the investigation, we also found the original video of 13 February 2025 on the official X handle of IANS with the help of advance search. Along with this video, it was also told that the student organizations were demonstrating for several days on their demands, many of which were detained today (13 February).
Boom spoke to Jyoti, who played an active role in Hindi researcher in Jamia and an active role in the movement in this regard. Jyoti denied viral claims in a conversation with Boom and said that this is not a case related to the Waqf Bill.
Jyoti said, “On December 15, we gave a call of ‘Resistance Day’, which is celebrated every year Jamia. In 2019, there was an attack on the students in Jamia on the same day. The police entered the library and killed the students. Then the anti-NRC movement was going on.”
According to Jyoti, Jamia VC closed the canteen and library in the name of maintenance on this day, although there was no notice of the university being closed. However, on 16 December, the students celebrated this ‘Resistance Day’. After this, the administration gave a show cause notice to the four students involved in it.
Jyoti further says, “Despite responding to the notice, the display committee sat on us. During the protest against this, the police also detained us on the morning of 13 February. We put some demands from the Jamia administration on all these issues. Our demands also include the issue of suspended students and FIRs.”
What was the whole matter
In 2019, there was a protest against CAA-NRC in Jamia. During this, on 15 December 2019, the students of Jamia were lathi -charged. Since then, this day is celebrated by students every year as ‘Resistance Day’. In this sequence, in the year 2024, the Jamia administration gave notice to the students involved in its fifth anniversary.
After this, students demonstrated against the administration on 10 February 2025 and on February 13, many protesting students were detained by the police. Meanwhile, the Jamia administration also suspended 17 students in the name of disciplinary action.
Their demands can be seen in the press release issued by the students on 16 February 2025. In these, many demands have been made including FIR, suspension and cancellation of disciplinary committee proceedings against students. There is no issue related to the Waqf Bill anywhere.
There is no mention of the Waqf Bill in the official statements released by Jamia on 13 February and 15 February. In a statement, Jamia said, “Students have damaged the property of the university and violated other rules. Taking preventive measures, students have been removed from the protest site by the University Administration and Proctorial Team on 13 February and were evicted from the campus.”
