The Incident and Aftermath:

The ill-fated Kanchanjunga Express was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah when the accident took place. The impact of the collision caused three compartments at the rear of the train to derail, which overturned massive casualties and injuries. Within a distance of thirty kilometers from New Jalpaiguri this is where the tragedy took place leaving the area with a large number of emergency teams that tried to assist.

Ashwini Vaishnaw the railway minister in India was quick to respond emphasizing that fast action needs to be taken. His tweet reads: “Unfortunate accident in NFR zone. Rescue operations going on at war footing. Railways, NDRF, and SDRF are working in close coordination. Injured are being shifted to the hospital. Senior officials have reached the site.”

This clearly shows that both railway authorities and other bodies dealing with catastrophes have put up concerted efforts towards managing this crisis besides providing immediate relief to the victims.

Helping Out at Bad Times:

Heavy rains which had started since morning greatly interfered with rescue operations. Despite these adverse conditions, emergency response teams worked  hard to evacuate casualties from the derailed compartments to the nearest hospital without stopping even once. According to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Katihar division in the northern frontier railway, 13174 Kanchanjunga Express met with an accident whereby it hit goods train causing a major incident that happened at around 9 o’clock today morning.

In addition to this roadblock caused by outright derailments that may call for special machineries and combined crew work towards ensuring passenger safety in a quicker way, there was utter helplessness. The rescue workers had to be quick on their feet through the debris under constant downpour indicating their high standard of service delivery during difficult times.

Government Response and Financial Aid:

In the aftermath of the incident, the central and state governments stepped in quickly to provide relief and support to the victims’ families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared an ex-gratia compensation from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) at Rs. 2 lakh each for dependent member of deceased person and Rs.50,000 for those hurt seriously. Therefore, this financial assistance has served as alleviation measures for immediate needs on behalf of victims as well as their relations for whom it might appear as a great moment of relief.

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her sympathies together with wishes for quick recovery to the injured people’s families.

Mamata Banerjee who is the Chief Minister of West Bengal expressed her condolences on Twitter. She also said that, moments after being informed, medical response teams were sent urgently together with other disaster units for an immediate intervention.

The Train Service and Safety Measures:

After the accident, all long-distance train services had to be suspended in the area leading to a lot of inconvenience to many passengers. The authorities continue to grapple with how they can bring everything back to normal but this has once again brought to the fore issues concerning railway infrastructure safety as well as necessity for stricter safety regulations.

Accidents of such kind require comprehensive investigations to find their root causes and take necessary corrective actions in order to prevent future occurrences. The safety of passengers must be our topmost concern including frequent track maintenance, modernized signal systems and strict observance of safety rules. It is an incident that underlines the importance of the safety of trains and how there is need to constantly make it better for the safety of passengers.

The loss of lives and the suffering of the injured are very obvious, and the collective grief and shock are observed. There is a lot that needs to be done during the rescue and investigation processes, but the focus remains on providing support to the victims and their families.
