Rescue Operation in Wayanad:Army, radar and now dog squad… work to save lives from the rubble is on a war footing

Heavy rains have caused havoc disaster in Kerala’s hilly district Wayanad. Many incidents of landslides have been reported in Wayanad. So far more than 300 people have lost their lives in this natural disaster. Hundreds of people are still missing. The work of removing dead bodies or possible survivors buried in the debris of the landslide is still going on. Rescue teams are using advanced technical equipment radar and dog squad team. On Saturday, Lieutenant Colonel Mohanlal visited the Wayanad landslide area with his 122 Infantry Battalion and TA Madras to boost the morale of all the personnel involved in the rescue operations.

An elderly woman donated 10 thousand rupees to the CM Relief Fund

After the Wayanad landslide accident, businessmen, celebrities and institutions are donating lakhs and crores of rupees to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. Meanwhile, an elderly woman running a tea shop has also come forward to help the victims. Subaida, a resident of Pallithottam in Kollam district, runs a small tea shop to feed herself and her husband. She has donated Rs 10 thousand to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF) to boost the rescue operations carried out by Indian army.

Searching for people trapped in the debris with drone pictures

As the rescue operation gained momentum after the Army completed the construction of a 190-foot long ‘Bailey bridge’, rescue teams used GPS coordinates, including the last locations received from mobile phones of people living in the landslide-hit areas, and drone images to look for people trapped under the debris.

Radar receives blue signal

Rescue workers conducting a search operation with radar system in the landslide-affected village of Wayanad have found signs of breathing by a human or animal. An official involved in the operation said that while searching a house in the badly affected Mundakkai village, a blue signal was received on the radar. After this, a rescue operation was carried out at that place. However, the rescue team did not find anything there.

272 people injured in the accident

Meanwhile, three days after the landslide in Mundakkai area of Wayanad district, rescue workers on Friday found four members of the same family safe in an area near Padavetty Kunnu. The death toll in landslide incidents is increasing rapidly. 273 people have been injured in this natural disaster.

218 people are still missing

Officials said the extent of loss of life and property in Wayanad would be known only after rescue workers clear houses covered with debris and wooden logs using heavy machinery. Kerala Public Works Minister P A Mohammed Riyas said 218 people were still missing as per the district administration’s records after checking Aadhaar documents, tourist details, questioning Asha workers and speaking to people in relief camps and hospitals.
