Guwahati: As part of its efforts to link Aadhaar card with NRC, the Assam government has taken a big decision on Wednesday. According to the decision of the Assam government, if the applicant or his family has not applied for NRC, then the application for Aadhaar card will also be rejected. Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said that the decision was taken during the cabinet meeting in view of infiltration attempts by citizens of crisis-hit Bangladesh. He said, ‘In the last two months, Assam Police, Tripura Police and BSP have caught a large number of infiltrators. This is why infiltration from Bangladesh is a matter of concern for us.
‘We need to strengthen our system’
Sharma said, ‘We need to strengthen our system and that is why we have decided to tighten the Aadhaar card system.’ The CM said after the cabinet meeting that from now on the General Administration Department of the Assam government will be the nodal agency for verification of Aadhaar applicants and an Additional District Commissioner in each district will be the concerned person. He said, ‘After the initial application, UIDAI will send it to the state government for verification. The local circle officer i.e. CO will first check whether the applicant or his parents or family has applied to be included in the NRC or not.
‘The rule will not apply to central government employees’
The Chief Minister said that if no application for NRC has been made then the application for Aadhaar card will be immediately rejected and the report will be submitted to the Center accordingly. He said, ‘If it is found that the application for NRC was made, the CO will go for field-level verification as per the directions of the Supreme Court. The Aadhaar will be approved after the officer is completely convinced. Sharma also said that this new instruction will not apply to those central government employees who are working in other states and who have not applied for NRC. (Language)
