What is the claim?
A video of Jharkhand BJP President and former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi is viral on social media, in which he is strongly criticizing Prime Minister Modi. This video is being shared as his recent comment during the assembly elections in the state.
In the viral video, Marandi is seen saying, “Modi ji has not fulfilled all the announcements he made to the people of this country in 2014. Now he is making the society fight between Hindus and Muslims. Sometimes in the name of cow, sometimes in the name of conversion, sometimes people did not install the government for this purpose. If the government plays such a cruel joke with the poor, then the person who votes for it should not be playing such a joke. Do you want to turn this country into Pakistan? We say that if Modi remains the Prime Minister of the country, India will become Pakistan in the next five years, there will be riots every day.
Many people including election analyst Yogendra Yadav and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan shared this video on social media. Bhushan wrote on Twitter, “Jharkhand BJP President is speaking the truth. He is saying that if Modi ji remains Prime Minister for five more years, India will become Pakistan! There will be riots every day.” Congress member Surendra Rajput wrote in Hindi, “A shocking revelation by the BJP President! Babu Lal Marandi is saying who will vote for Modi ji?”
Other social media users also shared the video as ‘breaking news’, citing Marandi’s comments as recent. Archived versions of such posts Here, Here, Here And Here Can be seen.

How do we know the truth?
We found that the viral video was originally posted by Ranchi-based journalist Ashok Gope on December 14, 2018. facebook page (archive Here) was posted on. The video is titled “Bad people of the society who voted for BJP….Babulal Marandi”. The original video is 1:14 minutes long, and the viral segment can be seen between 0:15 minutes to 1:14 minutes.
We contacted Ashok Gope to get more information about this video. He told Logically Facts, “I made this video in Ranchi in 2018, when Babulal Marandi was in Jharkhand Vikas Morcha. This was one of the many interviews he gave regularly. At that time he was not in BJP and Later joined the party.”

In this video he talks about the ongoing controversy regarding the Rafale deal. A local news channel named Taaza Jharkhand also shared this video on December 14, 2018.
Marandi’s political journey
Marandi was a BJP leader until 2006 and became the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand in 2000 after the formation of the state under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. He joined BJP resignation Established JVM-P in 2006.
In 2018, BJP leader Raghubar Das was the chief minister of the state, while Marandi was in the opposition party. In 2020, Marandi switched his party to BJP. merger And is contesting the 2024 state assembly elections as a BJP candidate.
