Supreme Court bench expressed displeasure
A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan made this comment during a hearing in a business dispute case. In fact, a lawyer appealed to the court to be adjourned for four weeks of the hearing, as senior advocate Harish Salve will hear further in the matter. The lawyer said that Salve is currently abroad and will attend the hearing when he returns to India.
On this, the bench expressed displeasure and said that ‘Do you feel that we will postpone the hearing of the case because you have named a senior advocate? Lawyers have to give up this habit. We cannot postpone hearing on this basis. The bench said that ‘we want to end this thinking’. However, the bench later accepted the appeal of the lawyer and postponed the hearing of the case. Harish Salve is a well-known lawyer of the country and many have been related to high profile matters.
In the past too, Supreme Court had reprimanded lawyers
Earlier in January too, the court reprimanded a lawyer as the lawyers attended the hearing from their car through video conferencing. Expressing displeasure over this, the court had reprimanded the lawyer and directed to maintain the dignity of the court.
