The wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has received great relief and the Sports Ministry has lifted the suspension on the federation with immediate effect. There was a dispute in WFI for the last few years and after this decision of the Sports Ministry, the dispute is expected to end.
What was the reason for suspension?
The Sports Ministry had suspended the WFI’s Executive Committee on Sanjay Singh’s Executive Committee for violation of the Sports Code. United World Wrestling (UWW), a global body of wrestling, also removed the suspension from Sanjay Singh -led WFI last year. After this, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had decided to dissolve the ad hoc committee led by Bhupendra Singh Bajwa, who is watching the daily work of wrestling in India. Sanjay Singh, chairman of WFI Executive Committee, may have got relief from UWW and IOA, but he was waiting for relief from the central government which was now completed. The government took action on WFI citing violations of rules and WFI was suspended only three after the election was completed.
