On Tuesday, the Sports Ministry withdrew the suspension on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) after 16 months. Due to which the way for organizing domestic competitions and selection of national teams for international events was cleared. The Ministry suspended WFI on 24 December 2023 due to a hasty announcement of the Under-15 and Under-20 National Championships.
The committee led by Sanjay Singh won the WFI election on 21 December 2023, but the government was angry with the selection of the site for the national championship in Nandini Nagar, Gonda, former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The ministry said in its order that WFE has taken corrective steps, so it has decided to remove the suspension.
The letter wrote that, the findings of the Spot Verification Committee, the compliance measures taken by WFI and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the comprehensive interest of Indian Games and Athletes cancels the suspension of the Indian Wrestling Federation issued by the sequential order of 24 December 2023 and restoration with immediate effect as a National Sports Federation for wrestling with the following instructions.
The letter states that, WFI will have to withdraw amendments made during the suspension period and balance the power between the designated officials and provide control and balance in the decision making process. This process should be completed in 4 weeks.
