The political crisis in South Korea continues to deepen and arresting President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is now facing impeachment, has become a difficult task for investigators. The President’s security personnel did not allow the arrest to take place
South Korean investigators arrived to arrest Yoon Suk Yeol at his residence on Friday, but local media reported that presidential security forces blocked investigators and Yoon was not arrested again. Yoon, whose removal by MPs has already been supported, will now step down from the post of President after the Supreme Court’s decision. A warrant for Yoon’s arrest has been issued and if he is arrested, Yoon will become the first President of South Korea to be arrested. Yun had decided to impose martial law in the country on 3 December. However, after the uproar he had to withdraw the decision. For this, Yoon Suk Yeol may be sentenced to jail or even death penalty.
South Korea’s Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) is investigating Yoon Suk Yeol. The CIO said that ‘the process of executing the arrest warrant of President Yoon Suk Yeol has started. According to South Korean media, a military unit inside the presidential residence prevented investigators from trying to arrest the president. It is not clear whether the Presidential Security Service, which still protects Yoon as President, will allow Yoon’s arrest warrant to be carried out. It is not yet clear which security unit stopped the CIO investigators. Yoon has been confined to his home since the arrest warrant was issued.
