Buyers exercised caution in the Indian stock market on Monday after increasing panic due to HMPV virus in China and confirmation of infected cases in Indian states like Karnataka and Gujarat. Due to this, major benchmark indices slipped and investors had to suffer a loss of about Rs 12 lakh crore.

On Monday, the 30-share Sensex fell by 1258.12 (1.59%) points to reach 77,964.99. On the other hand, the 50-share index Nifty fell 388.70 (1.62%) points to 23,616.05.

The India VIX index, which measures market volatility, jumped 2.01 (14.83%) points to 15.55. During this period, the rupee fell by 3 paise and closed at a record low of 85.82 (provisional) against the US dollar.
