A good news has come for former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. Pakistan’s Supreme Court has given a big decision regarding the party of jailed Khan. After this decision, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will emerge as the largest party in the Parliament with 109 seats. The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that this party is eligible for the allocation of seats reserved for women and minorities.

Peshawar High Court verdict quashed

In a major legal victory for Imran Khan’s (71) Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, a 13-member full bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa overturned the Peshawar High Court’s decision which had upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s move to deny the party a share in reserved seats in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies. The bench also declared the election commission’s decision “void” and termed it “against the Constitution of Pakistan”.

There will be 109 seats

According to Geo News, PTI will emerge as the largest party in the National Assembly as its tally will increase from 86 to 109 after it gets 23 reserved seats. The opposition alliance’s seat count in the National Assembly will also increase to 120, the report said. Currently, the joint opposition, including PTI, has 97 members.

How the controversy started

Let us tell you that the dispute over reserved seats started when the Election Commission rejected the petition of Sunni Ittehad Council, in which the party had requested to give it its share out of 70 reserved seats of National Assembly and 156 reserved seats of four provincial assemblies. The Election Commission rejected the application of SIC saying that it did not contest the election as a party and it got the strength of numbers when the winning independent candidates supported by PTI joined it.

Imran’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) could not contest the elections held on February 8, as the Election Commission rejected its intra-party elections and withdrew its election symbol “bat”. PTI was not eligible to claim seats reserved for women and minorities. These seats are given to the winning parties on the basis of proportional representation in the House. In such a situation, the candidates who won the elections as independents but with the support of PTI were instructed by the PTI leadership to join the SIC so that the party could claim the reserved seats.
