Novak Djokovic sets a new record for playing most Grand Slam matches, Osaka in third round

Novak Djokovic made a record of playing the most number of matches in Grand Slam competitions as soon as he took the court in the second round match of the Australian Open tennis tournament here on Wednesday, while Naomi Osaka reached the third round of any Grand Slam tournament for the first time in the last three years.

Djokovic has played 430 matches in all four Grand Slam tournaments, which is a new record. He had equaled Roger Federer (429) in the first round of Australian Open. Djokovic defeated Portuguese qualifier Jamie Faria 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. Djokovic has now won 379 matches in Grand Slam competitions while he had to face defeat in 51 matches.

I am lucky to be able to create another record today.” In the men’s category, third seed Carlos Alcaraz continued his brilliant performance with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 win over Yoshihito Nishioka.

In women’s singles, two-time Australian Open champion Osaka reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2022. She made a brilliant comeback after losing the first set against US Open semi-finalist Karolina Muchova and won 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. In this way, Osaka also avenged her defeat against Muchova in last year’s US Open.

Meanwhile, world number 97 Laura Siegmund displayed aggressive play and caused a major upset by defeating Olympic champion and last year’s runner-up Zheng Qianwen in straight sets. Zheng lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the final last year but then won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics and was runner-up at the WTA Finals, the final tournament of the season. But in the second round of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, he lost to 36-year-old Sigmund 7-6 (3), 6-3.

During this, the chair umpire also warned Zheng about wasting time. “I think today was not my day. I failed to score points at important moments,” Zheng said after the match. Getting a warning regarding time control also disrupted my concentration.” Last two-time champion Sabalenka won her last five games and defeated world number 54 Jessica Boujas Maneiro 6-3, 7-5 to win her third consecutive title. Step forward. She has won 16 consecutive matches in this tournament. Seventh seed Jessica Pegula has also reached the third round. She won 6-4, 6-2 over Elise Mertens. In another match, 14th seeded 17-year-old Mira Andreeva defeated Moyuka Uchijima 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(8).
