The National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has given many new textbooks of English medium in Roman script in Roman script amid language disputes in the country. These include English books. A new controversy has arisen after the books were given Hindi title. After this move, a debate has spread between academics and language experts. Some experts consider it to be confusing and deviating from educational traditions. Experts say that this step can be seen as an attempt to promote Hindi in non-Hindi speaking areas. States like Tamil Nadu have already opposed this.

For example, the English textbook of class 6 was earlier known as Honeyskal, now its new name is Eastern. Eastern Hindi is the word, which means east direction. It is also the name of a classical music raga. Similarly, the textbooks of class one and 2 are now named Mridang and class 3 books are named Santoor. These two are the names of Indian instruments. The same pattern has been adopted for mathematics books. Class 6 mathematics book, earlier Mathematics in English and Mathematics in Hindi, is now in the name of Mathematics Prakash in both languages.
NCERT did not clarify the reason
The preamble of class 6 English book has been written by NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Sakalani. Academic coordinator Kirti Kapoor has written this. He has not given the reason behind choosing the Hindi title Eastern. The preamble only states that the book contains elements of Indian knowledge systems, cultural heritage. It includes values such as gender equality, digital skills and environmental care.
Pronunciation related problems may occur: Specialist
Language experts say that giving Hindi title in Roman script can cause pronunciation problems. For example, the pronunciation of the body in the word Mathematics is not properly expressed in the Roman script. This step can create complexity for students and teachers.

Many books do not change names
New books are being published since 2023 under the National Education Policy 2020. Books of classes one to 6 have come first. Now books of classes 4, 5, 7 and 8 are being released. The names of all books have not been changed. For example, Class 6 science book is Curiosity in English, Curiosity in Hindi and Tzssus in Urdu.

Kerala General Education Minister V Shivkutty on Monday strongly criticized NCERT’s decision to adopt Hindi title for English medium textbooks. He called it a step of severe irrationality and weakening of India’s linguistic diversity. Shivakutty said that it is unfair to change the long -standing English titles with Hindi titles such as Mridangam and Santoor. This change is against Kerala’s commitment to preserve linguistic diversity and prioritize regional cultural autonomy. He said that English titles promote sensitivity and understanding among students. Shivakutty said that this decision of NCERT weakens federal principles and constitutional values. He reviewed the NCERT and demanded withdrawal of this decision and called upon all the states to unite against such imposition.
