Verdict may come today in rape-murder case

Kolkata: Verdict may come today in Kolkata’s famous RG Kar rape-murder case. On August 9, 2024, the body of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was found in the conference room of the hospital. In this case it was revealed that the doctor was first raped and then murdered. Doctors had protested for a long time against this incident and health services in the state came to a standstill.

The in-camera hearing of the case began on November 12 and a total of 50 witnesses were examined. The hearing of this case was completed on 9 January.

Who is the main accused?

The main accused in this case is Sanjay Roy. The police had arrested Sanjay Roy on August 10, soon after the incident on August 9. A Bluetooth earphone found near the victim’s body led to the police arresting Sanjay Roy as he was seen entering the seminar hall with the device around his neck in CCTV camera footage.

Calcutta High Court later transferred the case to CBI. The High Court had also made strong remarks against the police and the state government.

CBI has demanded death penalty

CBI has demanded death penalty for the main accused. Let us inform that the CBI had also arrested former RG Kar principal Sandeep Ghosh and Tala police station officer Abhijeet Mandal for alleged attempts to destroy evidence in this case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also investigating based on a case registered by the CBI into financial irregularities during Ghosh’s tenure. However, Ghosh and Mandal were later released on bail.
