In fact, Microsoft users around the world, including banks and airlines, reported widespread disruption on Friday. The technology company has said that it is gradually fixing the problem affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services. The cause, nature and scale of the disruption is not clear.

Microsoft said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ that “the situation is improving.” However, even after hours, there were reports of increasing disruptions around the world. ‘Downdetector’, a website that monitors internet outages reported by users, said that services have increased in Visa, ADT Security and Amazon, and various airlines including American Airlines and Delta.

Impact seen around the world

In Australia, news outlets reported that airlines, telecommunications providers, banks and media broadcasters were unable to access their computer systems, disrupting their services. Some banks in New Zealand said they were also offline. 

Microsoft 365 posted on X that the company was “working to redirect affected traffic to alternate systems to mitigate the adverse impact more quickly” and that they were “seeing positive trends in service availability.” The company has not yet responded to questions in this regard.
