T20 World Cup 2024:

It was on June 29, 2024 that marked the day India clinched T20 World cup 2024 trophy, an ICC title after a 7-run win against South Africa at Kensington Oval, Barbados in a hard-fought final match of T20 World Cup. For more than a decade, the world powerhouse nation had failed on several occasions but with this triumph they ended their title droughts and wrote one new significant chapter in the cricketing lore of their country.

Table of Contents

India's innings; Kohli and Axar leading from the front:

In pursuit of being first on a dry pitch India were able to finish at challenging total of 176/7 after their stipulated 20 overs. Virat Kohli scored 76 runs off 59 balls that really anchored his team’s total. Despite a slow phase in the middle overs, where Kohli could not hit a boundary for 35 balls, his experience and composure allowed India to stabilize after an early top-order collapse. Kohli hit 5 boundaries and 2 sixes in his 76 runs and posed a significant total for South Africa..

Axar Patel also support Kohli from other end and boost the run rate of the Indian innings in the middle part of the innings, smashing 47 off 31 balls with four boundaries and a six. His partnership with Kohli was vital pertaining to the final match, adding 72 runs for the fourth wicket. Shivam Dube also contributed a quickfire 27 off 16 balls, further adding up India’s total.

Bowling efforts by South Africa:

Keshav Maharaj (2/23) and Anrich Nortje (2/26) were the pick of the bowlers for South Africa with some significant contributions from Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen as well. Despite those wickets from Rabada and Jansen, South Africa could not contain India.

South African chase: Klaasen’s heroics in vain:

However, South Africa’s chase suffered an early setback when key wickets fell quickly. De Kock scored 39 off 31 balls and was supported by Stubbs (31 off 21) as they put up a partnership which would become the foundation for Klaasen’s biffing act later on in the innings. His 52 runs from 27 balls that included four sixes and pair of boundaries almost won them the match.

But then came the final twist in the tale- death bowling from India! Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh delivered bowls in the death overs excellently under pressure ensuring that South Africa could only manage 169/8.

The Dramatic Death Overs:

When South Africa needed 30 off 30 with six wickets in hand, India’s grip on the game seemed to be loosening. Bumrah’s brilliance was the key as he gave away only four runs in the 16th over followed by a stupendous 18th over that yielded just two runs and cost Marco Jansen his wicket.

The significant 17th and 20th overs were bowled by Hardik Pandya. With 16 more runs needed in the 20th over, Hardik dismissed David Miller by means of a brilliant boundary catch from Suryakumar Yadav.

Arshdeep Singh also played a vital role and ensure the match in favour of India. In the penultimate over, he bowled brilliantly, conceding only four runs and kept the winning momentum in favour of Indian side.

How did South Africa Collapse?

South Africa’s tail end could not resist Indian bowlers despite Klaasen made a brilliant effort. Miller was Hardik’s victim after having scored 21 runs off 17 balls while other batsmen showed no intention of containing the hosts’ onslaughts.

Key Performances and Turning Points:

Bumrah's Spectacular Spell:

Bumrah’s unplayable deliveries, knocked over Reeza Hendricks and Marco Jansen in  a flat track, played crucial role and pave the way of match to the Indian side. He just gave away 18 runs with 2 wickets during his 4 overs and made sure that South Africa did not reach anywhere close to target with enough wickets remaining.

Hardik Pandya’s All-Round Ability:

Pandya’s overall performance including some key overs as well as dismissing Klaasen is what mattered the most. His ability to handle pressure situations was illustrated when he faced only 15 runs in the final over and prevented them from scoring any more.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Boundary Catch:

Suryakumar Yadav’s catch along the boundary line to dismiss David Miller changed the game. His intervention made a difference in this match by sparking energy into India overall.

Arshdeep Singh: An Unshaken Player:

Arshdeep Singh bowled magnificently to keep it down to four runs in the 19th over during heavy tapping situations and his 2 wickets for 20 runs was just outstanding for an individual performance like that on a day with such high stakes.
