Vivek Joshi, a 1989 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Haryana cadre, has been appointed as Election Commissioner. Vivek Joshi (58) was born on 21 May 1966 and will handle the Election Commission by 2031. According to the law, the Chief Election Commissioner or Election Commissioner retires at the age of 65 or can stay in the commission for six years.

Gyanesh Kumar will take over the responsibility of Bihar assembly elections later this year during his tenure as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner and Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal assembly elections in 2026.

He played an important role in implementing the decision after some provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir during their tenure in the Union Home Ministry and took charge as Election Commissioner on 15 March 2024. He is a 1988 batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre.

He studied Business Finance at ICFAI and environmental economics at HIID of Harvard University, USA after completing BTech in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. He has also worked in the Kerala government’s Assistant District Magistrate of Ernakulam, Sub -Collector of Adour, Managing Director of Kerala State Development Corporation for SC/ST, Municipal Commissioner of Cochin Corporation besides Municipal Commissioner of Cochin Corporation.

Dnyanesh Kumar, as Secretary of the Government of Kerala, handled various departments like Finance Resources, Fast-Tract Projects and Public Works Department. In the Government of India, he also has the experience of working as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defense, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Additional Secretary, Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperation.
