Demand for election of Deputy Speaker in Lok Sabha, Supreme Court ready to hear the petition

Election of Deputy Speaker:

The demand for election of deputy speaker is being aired from long time. Hence, for this Public Interest litigation (PIL) has been filed.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed demanding the election of Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha. The matter is to be heard on July 22. On the matter related to this, the Supreme Court had issued a notice in February 2023 and sought a reply from the Central Government, but due to the reply not being filed till now, the hearing of the case was being postponed.

Why is the post of Deputy Speaker vacant in Lok Sabha?

On this matter in the Supreme Court, the counsel for the petitioner said, ‘In this case, the government should explain why the post of Deputy Speaker is still vacant in the Lok Sabha? Why has the election not been held for it till now?

Lok Sabha’s deputy speaker was not elected in the last term

A PIL was filed last year seeking a response from the Central government alleging that even after four years of the Lok Sabha, no member has been elected to the post of deputy speaker of Lok Sabha, while Article 93 of the Constitution clearly states that the Lok Sabha will have a deputy speaker besides the speaker.

The post of deputy speaker is also vacant in the assemblies of these states

This petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by Shariq Ahmed. During the hearing, the petitioner also told the court that the post of Deputy Speaker is lying vacant in the assemblies of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Jharkhand, which is a violation of Article 178 of the Constitution.
