The Central Government has appointed V Narayanan as the new Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Secretary of the Department of Space. He will take over from current ISRO chief S Somnath on January 14. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet of the Central Government has also issued a notification in this regard. It has been told that the appointment of V Narayanan will be for a period of two years from January 14. Let us inform that Somnath took charge as Secretary of the Department of Space on January 14, 2022 for a tenure of three years.

V Narayanan has nearly four decades of experience. He has held many key positions in the Indian Space Organization. He has expertise in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. He was also the Project Director of the C25 Cryogenic Project of the GSLV Mk Ill vehicle.

Narayanan joined ISRO in 1984 and held various positions before becoming the centre’s director. Initially for about four and a half years, he worked in the area of ​​sounding rockets and solid propulsion of ASLV and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) at Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC).

In 1989, he completed M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering with first rank at IIT-Kharagpur and joined Cryogenic Propulsion area at Liquid Propulsion System Center (LPSC). As Director of Liquid Propulsion System Centre, Valiyamala, he has been instrumental in developing the CE20 cryogenic engine for GSLV Mk III. Along with this, during his tenure, LPSC has built 183 liquid propulsion systems and control power plants for various missions of ISRO.
