The Badminton World Federation (BWF) will test the scoring system of three points in select competitions for at least six months from April this year with a view to attract new audiences and shorten the matches. The current format has a 21 -point ‘Best of Three Game’ (winning two games winners) matches.
The BWF Council, which takes the decision of the World Operations Association, supported the scoring system of three -digit three -digit scoring system to change the current scoring system during its meeting in Kuala Lumpur in November, which is already part of alternative rules of badminton. The BWF said, “The BWF Council approved a plan to conduct a practical test of three-digit three-points in selected continental championships, grade 3 tournaments, national and international leagues and national tournaments from April to September 2025,” said.
The International Challenge, International Series and Future Series Competition falls under the Grade 3 tournament. Explaining the reasons behind choosing the new scoring system, BWF said, “Three games of 15 digits compared to the current system, which increases the possibility that each digit will be more exciting.” The result in three games of 15 digits compared to the current system leads to a faster and makes a good balance of enthusiasm in both each game and total game. ,
The BWF also said that the three -digit three -digit game system will be smaller, the program will be better, fans will be interested and this will affect the health of the players and they will be less tired. He said, “The number of rallies in the three -digit three games system is also likely to be reduced and this will keep the game more continuous. After the result of the test, the BWF Council will take a final decision as to whether the annual general meeting of the BWF should be proposed in 2026 or not.
