The Bombay High Court on Wednesday granted bail to researcher Rona Wilson and activist Sudhir Dhawale, both arrested in 2018 in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case. A division bench of Justices A S Gadkari and Kamal Khata took the decision considering his long stay in jail and the possibility of early disposal of the case.

Defense lawyers Mihir Desai and Sudeep Pasbola argued that both the accused have been in jail since 2018 and charges have not yet been framed in the special court. Regarding this, the High Court said on Wednesday that it is not considering the merits and demerits of the case at this time.

Wilson and Dhawale were directed to deposit a bond of Rs 1 lakh each and appear before the special NIA court for trial. Regarding this, the bench said that there are more than 300 witnesses in the case and hence it is not possible to conclude the case in the near future.

Let us inform that this case is related to the allegedly inflammatory speeches given at the Elgar Parishad conference held in Pune on December 31, 2017, due to which violence broke out in Koregaon-Bhima in Pune district the next day.

Pune Police had claimed

It is noteworthy that Pune Police had claimed that the conference had the support of Maoists. Later the National Investigation Agency took over the investigation. Many of the 16 people arrested in the case are now out on bail. Where Rona Wilson was arrested from her home in Delhi in June 2018. Investigative agencies had described him as one of the top leaders of urban Maoists. Sudhir Dhawale was the first to be arrested, he was accused of being an active member of the banned Communist Party of India.
