Several coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh express train derailed in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda today. Four passengers died in the incident while around 20 are injured.

Out of 23, 21 coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh express train derailed, including five AC coaches. Several rescue teams have reached for relief operations.

The accident happened in Pikaura which is located between Gonda and Jhilahi in Uttar Pradesh. Gonda District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police have reached the accident site.

Railways and the UP Police have begun probe into the claims of the train’s loco pilot. The loco pilot said he heard an explosion just before the derailment.

What Passenger Said?

“For a moment the coach was filled with dust and it was all dark. I don’t remember what happened in the next few seconds. I only remember the cries and that a passenger pulled my hand, and helped me get out of the window,” - Sandeep Kumar

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath also directed the officials to reach the site and expedite the relief measures immediately. The UP CM ordered the district administration to properly treat the injured.

The development comes after several cases of train derailment have been reported across several parts of the country.

The Railways have announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakhs to the family of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakhs for those who have been grievously injured and Rs 50,000 to those who suffered minor injuries.

"The train accident in Gonda district is extremely sad. District administration officials have been directed to carry out relief and rescue operations on a war footing and to take the injured to the hospital on top priority and provide them proper treatment" - Yogi
