Not only this, some presidential candidates of major parties have also been assassinated. While many have narrowly escaped deadly attacks. There have been not one but many such incidents in the history of America.
So far, 4 presidents of America have been killed in various attacks. While many candidates have also lost their lives. Some such incidents of murder and attempted murder in the political history of the country since the year 1776 are as follows —-
The 16th President of America has been assassinated
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of America, was also shot dead. On 14 April 1865, a man named John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln dead. During the incident, he was watching the play ‘Our American Cousin’ with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln at Ford Theater in Washington. Later, the attacker Booth was shot dead on 26 April 1865. He was found hiding in a field near Bowling Green, Virginia.
Ames Garfield was also killed
Ames Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, was the second President to be assassinated within six months of taking office. He was shot by Charles Guiteau while walking to a train station in Washington on July 2, 1881. Guiteau was convicted and sentenced to death in June 1882.
The 25th President was also assassinated
The 25th President of America was William McKinley. McKinley was shot on 6 September 1901 in Buffalo, New York, when he was shaking hands with people after giving a speech. A person shot him twice in the chest from a close range. McKinley died during treatment on 14 September 1901.
After him, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt became the President of the country. 28-year-old Leon F. of Detroit confessed to the crime of firing the shot. He was sentenced to death by electrocution on 29 October 1901.
There was a deadly attack on the 32nd and 33rd President as well
Similarly, America’s 32nd President Franklin D. Roosevelt had just finished his speech from an open car in Miami when the sound of gunfire was heard. Roosevelt was not injured in this incident which took place in February 1933, but Chicago Mayor Anton Karmack lost his life. Guiseppe Zangara, the culprit of this attack, was awarded death penalty. After this, America’s 33rd President Harry S. Truman was attacked in Washington’s Blair House in November 1950.
Two gunmen had entered it. Truman survived the shootout with the gunmen, but a White House policeman and an attacker were killed. Two other White House policemen were injured. Oscar Callajo was arrested in this attack and was given death penalty. In 1952, Truman commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment. President Jimmy Carter released him from jail in 1979.
35th President John F. Kennedy was also shot dead
John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was also shot dead by assailants. When Kennedy went to Dallas with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in November 1963, a gunman ambushed him and attacked him. Kennedy was immediately taken to the hospital, but he died. Police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald a few hours later and two days later Oswald was shot dead while he was being taken from the police headquarters to jail.
The 38th, 40th and 43rd Presidents were also shot
This series of attacks on American presidents continued. 38th President Gerald Ford was attacked twice in a few weeks in 1975. But he was fortunate to survive both the incidents. After him, America’s 40th President Ronald Reagan was shot in Washington in March 1981. He was attacked when he was leaving after giving a speech. Then John Hinckley Jr., who was in the crowd, shot him.
He recovered after treatment. America’s 43rd President George W. Bush: Bush was attending a rally with Georgia’s President Mikhail Saakashvili in 2005 when a hand grenade was thrown at him. The hand grenade did not explode and no one was injured.
The presidential candidate was shot dead in 1968
Presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt, who was also a former president, was shot during his campaign in Milwaukee in 1912. He did not suffer any serious injury in this attack. But after this, Robert F. Kennedy was in the race to become the presidential candidate from the Democratic Party, when he was shot dead in Los Angeles in 1968.
Similarly, another presidential candidate George C. Wallace was in the race for the nomination from the Democratic Party. He was shot during a campaign in Maryland in the year 1972. Due to this incident, he became paralyzed in the lower part of the waist.
