Dhar/Indore: In a ‘West Disposal Plant’ in Pithampur Industrial Area of Madhya Pradesh, the process of consumed the first round of consumed by burning 10 tonnes of waste from 337 tonnes of waste in Bhopal’s union carbide factory. Giving information about this, the officials said that strict security arrangements have been made for this process that started on Thursday. Earlier, the Supreme Court refused to intervene in the order of Madhya Pradesh High Coort to transfer and settle the waste related to the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984 to a private company operated plant in Pithampur in Dhar district.
SC refuses to stop testing
The bench of Justice BR Gawai and Justice AG Christ also refused to ban the testing to be held on Thursday for the disposal of waste from the plant of Union Carbide India Limited. According to the state government, the garbage of the Union Carbide factory includes the soil, reactor residue, sevin (pesticide) residue, naphthal residue and ‘semi -processed’ remains of the premises of this closed unit. The State Pollution Control Board says that according to scientific evidence, the impact of Sevin and Nephthal chemicals in this waste has now become ‘almost negligible’.
‘It will take 72 hours to burn and destroy waste’
According to the board, this waste currently has no existence of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas and there are no radioactive particles in it. Board regional officer Srinivas Dwivedi said, ‘5 types of waste of Union Carbide factory will be mixed in the’ West Disposal Plant ‘of Pithampur in a proper proportions from the mixer and put 10 tonnes of it in the consumer. Earlier, its temperature will be extended to 850 degrees Celsius by running the consumer empty. He said that the process of dumping the waste into the burning ash is expected to start from 10-11 am on Friday and it will take about 72 hours to destroy 10 tonnes of waste as a test.
‘Security has been increased in Pithampur industrial area’
Dwivedi said that concrete residues, water and gases released during the entire disposal process will also be settled properly. He said that he has been given masks, glasses, gloves and other equipment to protect the employees associated with the disposal of union carbide. A police official said that security has been increased in Pithampur Industrial Area amidst the commencement of the process of disposal of this waste. He informed that about 500 police personnel from 24 police stations have been deployed in this area and senior police and administration officers are also on the spot.
At least 5479 people died in Bhopal
Let me tell you that in Bhopal, on the inter -3 December 1984 night, there was a leakage of highly poisonous methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas from the Union Carbide factory. At least 5,479 people were killed and thousands of people were crippled. It is considered one of the largest industrial disasters in the world. It was rushed to an industrial waste settlement plant in Pithampur, about 250 km from the capital of the state, on January 2, under the plan to settle 337 tonnes of waste of union carbide factory closed in Bhopal.
