The focus of the Government of India is the Act East Policy and under this policy the Government of India is quietly working towards strengthening its relations with Southeast Asian countries. Along with this policy, India also has its eyes on the Korean Peninsula. India’s relations with South Korea have been good, but India’s relations with North Korea have been somewhat veiled. India’s embassy in North Korea was also closed for the past several years, but now it seems that there has been a big change in India’s diplomacy and India has started trying to strengthen its relations with Pyongyang.

Indian embassy reopens in Pyongyang

In July 2021, India closed its embassy in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, and recalled its entire staff, including its ambassador, back to Delhi. India cited the Corona epidemic as the reason for this. However, even after the Corona epidemic, India did not send its ambassador to Pyongyang. Now suddenly at the beginning of this month India has decided to resume the functioning of its embassy in North Korea. At present a team of technical and diplomatic staff has been sent to North Korea. The Indian Embassy has been closed for about three and a half years. The North Korean government is also infamous for spying, so first the technical team is investigating the embassy. However, it may take some time to appoint an ambassador.

Why did this change come in India’s policy?

North Korea’s influence has increased significantly in recent years. The reason for this is North Korea’s nuclear power and also North Korea has successfully tested hypersonic missiles and long-range missiles. In such a situation, the strategic importance of North Korea has increased significantly compared to four years ago. According to media reports, the Indian government also fears that North Korea’s missile technology may fall into the hands of Pakistan or Pakistan’s terrorist organizations, that is why the Indian government wants to improve its relations with North Korea.

Quad is also a reason

To deal with the growing challenge of China in the Indian Pacific Ocean, America, India, Japan and Australia have together formed an organization called Quad. It is being claimed that in response to the Quad, Russia, China, Iran and North Korea are also strengthening the alliance. India already has strong relations with Russia and Iran. Efforts are being made by the government to improve relations with China. In such a situation, North Korea is also important for India. This is the reason why India has started normalizing its relations with North Korea also.
