Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has written in his new book that when the post of President became vacant in 2012, Pranab Mukherjee should have been given the reins of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-II government. He said that Manmohan Singh should have been made the President then.

Iyer (83) has written in the book that if this had been done at that time, the governance of the UPA government would not have reached a state of paralysis. He said that the decision to retain Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister and send Pranab Mukherjee to Rashtrapati Bhavan had ended the chances of forming the government for the third time.
Iyer has made these comments in his upcoming book ‘A Maverick in Politics’. In the book, Aiyar also talks about his early days in politics, the rule of former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao, his tenure as a minister in UPA-I, his tenure in the Rajya Sabha and then his decline in status, exit from the scene and political collapse. Have mentioned.
Iyer wrote, “In 2012, the Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) had to undergo ‘coronary bypass surgery’ several times. He never fully recovered physically. Due to this, the pace of their work slowed down and it also affected the governance. When the Prime Minister’s health deteriorated, around the same time the Congress President also fell ill. But the party did not make any official announcement regarding his health.
He said it soon became clear that there was a lack of momentum, a lack of governance in both the offices – the Prime Minister and the party president. Whereas many crises, especially Anna Hazare’s ‘India Against Corruption’ movement, were either not addressed effectively or were not dealt with at all.
He wrote, “President’s choice: Manmohan Singh or Pranab Mukherjee.” Personally, I believed that when the post of President became vacant in 2012, Pranab Mukherjee should have been handed over the reins of the government and Dr. Manmohan Singh should have been made the President of India.
