TRAI has issued new guidelines to all telecom operators Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea and BSNL, which is going to benefit crores of mobile users of the country. The regulator has asked telecom operators to upload information related to their network coverage on the website. This instruction of TRAI is part of the new Quality of Service (QoS) implemented from October 1, 2024. This decision of TRAI will help the users in choosing their telecom operator.
TRAI’s new guidelines
TRAI in its guidelines has directed telecom operators that every wireless access service provider will have to publish the geospatial coverage map on its website in such a way that it can help the users in choosing wireless voice and broadband services. Also, operators will have to keep updating it from time to time. Although telecom operators publish the network coverage map on their website, but due to it not being updated from time to time, users are not able to know exactly which area has good signal strength while choosing the operator.
Focus on quality of service
The telecom regulator has said that network coverage is very important for the quality of service of telecom operators. No user can get better quality of service in non-coverage area. In such a situation, it will be very important for telecom operators to publish the details of service wise geospatial coverage on their website. These guidelines of TRAI are for all wireless service providers.
At present, except Airtel and Jio, all telecom operators are providing 2G, 3G and 4G coverage to the users. Jio and Airtel are providing 5G service to the users. At the same time, BSNL has not yet launched 4G service commercially. According to TRAI guidelines, it is necessary to mention in the network coverage map whether 5G/4G/3G/2G coverage is available there or not. Operators can mention the location of their base station if they wish, but this is optional.
122 crore users benefited
TRAI has given a deadline of April 1, 2025 to follow these guidelines. Along with mentioning the network coverage area, telecom operators have also been asked to provide a user feedback button on their website so that users can give their feedback regarding network coverage. This guideline of TRAI can prove beneficial for 122 crore mobile users of the country.
