The ruling National People’s Power (NPP) led by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has achieved a historic victory in the parliamentary elections. As of 6 a.m. local time on Friday, the NPP had received 62 percent or 4.4 million votes nationally. They have secured 35 out of 196 seats under proportional representation from the districts. Samagi Balawega got less than 18 percent of the votes and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s National Democratic Front (NDF) got less than 5 percent.
Dissanayake won the presidential election in September on a promise to fight corruption and return stolen assets. His decision to call snap elections and seek parliamentary support for his agenda proved correct. The NPP alliance crossed the majority mark by winning 123 seats in the 225-member assembly. The party is still on its way to winning many seats.
